Each month we are making Just One Swap to an eco-friendly cleaning product. We’re asking our clients, our team – and you – to join us.
This week I talked to my office team about switching to eco-friendly cleaning products for our Just One Swap campaign. And I’ll be honest, they had some concerns about making a total switch.
Why switch?
Yes, they can see why we should be switching to greener cleaning products. But they still had questions.
- Do all greener products cost more than their usual choice?
- Does every eco-friendly cleaning products work? What about the tough jobs like oven cleaning limescale and laundry?
- Will using a green product mean the cleaning takes longer (with more hassle and more scrubbing?)
And I get it. Maybe you have the same questions when it comes to greener cleaning.
When we have favourite products in our cleaning toolkit which we know work for us, it’s hard to make a switch. So let’s look at these questions one by one.
Are eco-friendly cleaning products more expensive?
We’ve all seen ads pop up on social media for fancy products in designer glass bottles, with expensive-sounding ingredients. And often they cost more than our old favourites from the supermarket.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. There are plenty of simple, low cost planet -friendly alternatives that don’t cost the earth. In fact, green products may even be cheaper because they are more concentrated (to cut down on plastic packaging) or offer bulk-buying discounts.
Plastic-free dish sponges and cleaning cloths might cost a little more, but they last many times longer than the cheap, disposable alternative. So there’s a saving in the long run.
Do eco-friendly cleaning products work?
It’s so frustrating when you spend money on a greener cleaning product which makes big promises, and it doesn’t work. We’ve all been there. I’ve had plenty of products in the back of my cleaning cupboard which didn’t deliver the sparkling oven or fresh laundry I was hoping for.
But don’t despair. It is possible to have a clean home and a clean eco-conscience. There are eco-friendly cleaning products that are effective. And when you try them, you’ll never be tempted to switch back to your old favourites.
Will eco-friendly cleaning take longer?
We are all busy, and there are plenty of things we would rather be doing instead of cleaning. So we all want our cleaning products to work, and work fast.
That’s especially important for our professional cleaning team at Just Helpers, who need to make sure their client’s home is sparkling by the end of their visit.
However, more planet-friendly doesn’t have to mean more elbow grease, if you choose the right products.
Just One Swap: The Challenge
When we’re looking at the cost of cleaning, we need to think beyond the cost to our pocket. We also need to consider the cost to the planet, to our own health, and to the health of our cleaning professionals who use these products all day. day in, day out.
But if we’re going to make changes that stick, then we need affordable, eco-friendly cleaning products that work.
For Just One Swap, we will be swapping one product from our cleaning cupboard for an eco-friendly alternative. We will compare:
- A leading high street brand
- vs leading eco-friendly brands
- vs a homemade solution.
And of course, we will be testing to make sure these products work effectively, without the elbow grease.
